Red Lined Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma hongsloi)

Taxonomy and Distribution

Apistogramma hongsloi belongs to the family Cichlidae. It is native to the Orinoco river drainage in Colombia and Venezuela. This species is often found in slow-moving tributaries and forest streams with leaf litter and submerged vegetation.

Tank Requirements

A tank size of at least 60-80 liters is recommended for a pair. The aquarium should be well-planted with driftwood and caves to provide territories and hiding spots. Soft, acidic water is preferred, and regular water changes are necessary to maintain water quality.

Behavior and Compatibility

While generally peaceful, they can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with small, non-aggressive tank mates like tetras or hatchetfish that occupy the upper levels of the water column. Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may stress them.

Diet and Feeding

They are omnivorous and require a varied diet. High-quality micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms are ideal. Feeding small amounts multiple times a day helps simulate natural foraging behavior.

Breeding

Breeding occurs in caves or crevices. The female typically guards the eggs, while the male defends the territory. Providing soft, acidic water is often the key to triggering successful spawning. Once free-swimming, the fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp.
