Distribution and Habitat
Macropodus opercularis originates from a wide range across East Asia, including China, Vietnam, and the Korean peninsula. They are typically found in stagnant or slow-moving waters, such as rice paddies, marshes, and drainage ditches. These environments often have low oxygen levels, which is why the species evolved a labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air.

Behavior and Compatibility
This species is highly territorial, particularly the males. They may act aggressively toward conspecifics or other fish with long, flowing fins. It is generally recommended to keep them in a species-only tank or with robust, fast-moving tank mates. Avoid housing them with small, slow-moving, or shy species that may be bullied.

Tank Requirements
A tank of at least 80 liters is recommended for a pair. The aquarium should be densely planted with floating plants to provide cover and break up lines of sight, which helps reduce aggression. They are hardy and can tolerate a wide temperature range, often thriving at room temperature.
Diet
Paradise fish are omnivorous and not particularly fussy eaters. In the aquarium, they will readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. A varied diet is essential to maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
Breeding
As bubble-nesters, breeding is a fascinating process. The male constructs a nest of bubbles at the surface, often among floating vegetation. Once the female deposits eggs, the male takes over the duty of guarding the nest and the fry. It is advisable to remove the female after spawning to prevent the male from harassing her.
