Distribution and Habitat

Apistogramma borellii originates from the Paraguay and Paraná river basins in South America. They inhabit slow-moving or stagnant waters, often found among leaf litter and dense vegetation. This environment provides them with essential cover and hunting grounds for small invertebrates.

Tank Requirements

A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended for a pair. The aquarium should feature a soft substrate, such as sand, and be well-planted with driftwood and caves to provide necessary hiding spots. These fish prefer stable water parameters and benefit from regular maintenance to keep nitrate levels low.

Diet and Feeding

These cichlids are omnivorous. In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied diet consisting of high-quality micro-pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Occasional live food feedings can help stimulate natural hunting behaviors and improve overall coloration.

Behavior and Compatibility

Opal Apistogrammas are relatively peaceful compared to other cichlids. They are best kept in pairs or small groups in larger tanks. They are generally compatible with small tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. However, they may become territorial during breeding, especially towards other bottom-dwelling species.

Breeding

Breeding is achievable in a dedicated tank with soft, slightly acidic water. They are cave spawners, so providing coconut shells or ceramic caves is essential. The female will guard the eggs and fry, while the male typically defends the wider territory. Providing live baby brine shrimp is crucial for the successful rearing of the fry.
