Apistogramma panduro

Distribution and Habitat

Apistogramma panduro originates from the Amazon River basin in Peru. They typically inhabit slow-moving, shaded forest streams and tributaries characterized by leaf litter and soft, acidic water. Replicating this environment with a sand substrate, driftwood, and plenty of hiding spots is essential for their well-being.

Tank Requirements and Compatibility

A tank of at least 80 liters is recommended for a pair. The aquarium should be densely planted with caves and crevices provided by rocks or coconut shells. While generally peaceful toward other species, they can become territorial during breeding. They are best kept with small, non-aggressive dither fish like tetras or hatchetfish.

Diet

These cichlids are primarily carnivorous. In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied diet of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They may accept high-quality micro-pellets or flakes, but live and frozen foods are preferred to maintain optimal health and coloration.

Breeding

Apistogramma panduro are substrate spawners that prefer laying eggs in caves. The female is responsible for guarding the eggs and fry, while the male defends the broader territory. Providing soft, acidic water and stable conditions is crucial for successful spawning and fry development.
