Taxonomy and Distribution

The Neon Blue variant is derived from Aequidens pulcher, a cichlid native to the freshwater systems of Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela. While the species is widespread in the wild, the specific neon blue phenotype is a product of selective breeding within the aquarium trade to enhance its natural metallic blue hues.

Behavior and Tank Requirements

These cichlids are moderately active and generally peaceful compared to other cichlids, though they can become territorial during breeding. A minimum tank size of 150 liters is recommended for a pair. They appreciate a setup with sandy substrate, driftwood, and robust plants, as they may occasionally rearrange smaller decorations.

Diet and Compatibility

As omnivores, they accept a varied diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. They are suitable for community tanks with fish of similar size and temperament. Avoid housing them with very small, timid species that may be viewed as prey or intimidated by their presence.

Breeding

Breeding is relatively straightforward if a compatible pair is formed. They are substrate spawners that typically lay eggs on a flat rock or surface they have cleaned. Both parents show exceptional care for the fry, protecting them diligently. Providing adequate hiding spots for the female is important if the male becomes overly persistent.
