Taxonomy and Distribution
The Butterfly Cichlid, or Ram, is native to the Orinoco River basin in South America, spanning Venezuela and Colombia. The Electric Blue variant is a man-made color morph derived from the original species. They belong to the Cichlidae family and are highly prized for their vibrant, non-natural coloration.

Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
These fish require a well-established aquarium of at least 60 liters for a pair. They are sensitive to water quality and fluctuations. A soft, acidic environment is preferred, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 and high temperatures ranging from 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. Regular partial water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels low.

Behavior and Compatibility
Electric Blue Rams are generally peaceful and shy, making them suitable for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. While they can display territorial behavior during breeding, they are not aggressive. Providing plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and dense vegetation, helps them feel secure.

Diet and Nutrition
They are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and color. High-quality micro-pellets or flake food should be supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Frequent small feedings are preferred over one large meal to accommodate their small digestive systems.

Breeding
Breeding these fish can be challenging due to their specialized requirements. They are substrate spawners that typically lay eggs on flat stones or inside caves. Both parents usually participate in guarding the eggs and fry. Success requires very clean, soft, and warm water. Note that captive-bred color morphs may sometimes exhibit reduced parental instincts.
