Lemna minor (Duckweed)

Lemna minor is a small, free-floating aquatic plant commonly known as duckweed. It is widely recognized for its rapid reproduction and ability to cover the water surface. While often considered a nuisance by some aquarists due to its invasive nature, it serves as an excellent natural nitrate remover and provides shade for shy fish species in home aquariums.

Cultivation and Care

Duckweed is exceptionally easy to grow and requires very little intervention. It thrives in most water conditions and prefers low water flow to prevent the fronds from being submerged. Because it grows extremely fast, regular thinning is necessary to ensure that light can still penetrate to the submerged plants below. It does not require supplemental CO2 or specialized fertilization.

Aquarium Suitability

This plant is ideal for tanks with low-light requirements or for those looking to improve water quality through nutrient uptake. However, it can be difficult to remove once established, as even the smallest remaining fronds will quickly multiply.
