Temperature

Maintain a stable water temperature between 24-26°C (75-79°F).

pH

The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, between 6.8 and 7.8.

Hardness

They prefer moderate water hardness, ideally between 10 and 20 dGH.

Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate

Ammonia and Nitrite must always be at 0 ppm. Nitrates should be kept strictly below 20 ppm. They are scaleless fish and are highly sensitive to deteriorating water quality.

Lighting

Moderate lighting is sufficient. They do not require intense illumination, and a naturally lit environment helps them feel secure.

Water flow

Moderate to strong water flow is highly recommended to replicate their natural riverine habitats and to ensure high oxygen levels in the massive tanks they require.

Decorations and Plants

A soft sand substrate is essential to prevent abrasions to their bellies. Decorate with large, smooth river rocks and heavy driftwood. Plants can be included, but they may be inadvertently damaged by the puffer's sheer size and clumsy movements.

Diet

Mbu Pufferfish are strict carnivores with a specialized diet. They primarily feed on hard-shelled invertebrates such as snails, clams, mussels, crayfish, and crabs. Feeding hard-shelled foods is absolutely critical to naturally wear down their constantly growing teeth.

Breeding
