Identification
This species forms upright stems with paired leaves. Underwater growth is recognized by finely divided, lace-like leaves, although leaf shape can vary with growing conditions. Emersed leaves are generally broader and less divided. The supplied label identifies the plant as Hygrophila difformis; cultivar status is not indicated.

Planting
Remove the plant from its tissue-culture container and rinse away the culture medium. Separate the stems into small groups and plant them individually in the substrate, leaving the lower leaves above the surface. Avoid burying the entire stem base, as this can encourage decay.

Aquarium care
Provide moderate lighting, a nutrient-containing substrate or regular water-column fertilization, and stable water conditions. Carbon dioxide is not essential, but supplementation can improve growth and leaf development. Good circulation helps distribute nutrients through a dense group.

Pruning and propagation
Trim the stems when they approach the water surface or become crowded. Replant healthy cut tops, or allow side shoots to develop from trimmed stems. Frequent pruning produces a fuller group and prevents shading of shorter plants.

Growth habit
With fast growth and a potential height of about 20–50 cm, this plant is normally used in the background of medium and large aquariums. It can also be kept in the midground in larger tanks or maintained at a shorter height through repeated trimming.
