Taxonomy and Habitat
Clithon diadema belongs to the family Neritidae. These snails are native to tropical regions, often inhabiting areas with brackish or hard freshwater conditions. They are typically found in streams and rivers where they graze on submerged surfaces. In the home aquarium, they prefer stable environments with plenty of hard surfaces to explore.
Water Parameters
To maintain shell health, these snails require hard water with a high mineral content. Calcium is essential for preventing shell erosion and supporting the growth of their characteristic antlers. They thrive in alkaline conditions, and sudden fluctuations in water chemistry should be avoided to prevent stress.
Feeding and Plant Safety
These snails are primarily herbivorous, feeding on various types of algae, including soft green algae and diatoms. They are considered very safe for planted aquariums as they rarely consume healthy plant tissue. If natural algae is insufficient, their diet can be supplemented with blanched vegetables or high-quality sinking invertebrate wafers.
Reproduction and Population Control
Reproduction in freshwater aquariums is generally unsuccessful for this species. While they may lay small, white, hard egg capsules on surfaces, the larvae typically require brackish or saltwater conditions to develop into juveniles. Consequently, they do not become a nuisance pest in freshwater tanks, and population control is rarely necessary.
