Sagittaria subulata (Dwarf Sagittaria)

Introduction

Sagittaria subulata, widely known as Dwarf Sagittaria, is a fantastic beginner-friendly plant that adds a vibrant, grassy aesthetic to any aquascape. It is highly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of water conditions, making it a staple in the aquarium hobby for decades.

Growth and Care

This plant spreads rapidly via runners (stolons) to form a dense carpet in the foreground or middleground. While it is exceptionally undemanding regarding light and CO2, providing a nutrient-rich substrate will significantly boost its growth rate and vitality. In lower light setups or crowded conditions, the leaves may stretch and grow taller as they reach for the surface, sometimes achieving heights of up to 30 cm.

Aquascaping Application

Dwarf Sagittaria is perfect for creating natural-looking, grassy meadows in the aquarium. Its bright green, ribbon-like leaves contrast beautifully with darker background plants, red varieties, and hardscape materials like driftwood and stone. Occasional trimming of the runners helps maintain the plant within desired boundaries and prevents it from overtaking smaller, more delicate foreground carpeting species.
