Anubias barteri (Broadleaf Anubias)

Description

Anubias barteri is a highly adaptable and popular aquatic plant native to West Africa, where it grows along riverbanks and streams, often submerged or semi-submerged. It is renowned for its hardiness, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. The plant features thick, dark green, leathery leaves that are very durable and resistant to herbivorous fish, making it ideal for cichlid tanks or other setups with plant-eating inhabitants.

Planting and Care

Unlike many other aquatic plants, Anubias barteri should not be planted directly into the substrate. Its rhizome, the horizontal stem from which leaves and roots grow, must be kept above the substrate to prevent rot. It is best attached to driftwood or rocks using fishing line or super glue until its roots firmly anchor it. This plant thrives in low to medium light conditions; too much light can encourage algae growth on its slow-growing leaves. CO2 supplementation is not essential but can promote slightly faster and more robust growth. Regular fertilization, particularly with liquid fertilizers, will support its health.

Aquascaping Use

Due to its ability to attach to hardscape, Anubias barteri is incredibly versatile in aquascaping. It is commonly used as a middleground or foreground plant, providing a natural, lush green accent when secured to decorative elements like driftwood or lava rock. Its broad leaves offer excellent hiding spots for smaller fish and invertebrates. The plant's slow growth rate means minimal pruning is required, making it a low-maintenance addition to any planted aquarium.
